This series of articles was first published in "Irish Baptist" between April 1986 and April 1987.

Certain aspects of articles will be particularly relevant for those in fulltime ministry. However Dr Oakley hoped that all involved in preaching would derive some help. Preaching the word was at the centre of his life work and he considered preaching vital work for Christ's kingdom.

Dr Oakley felt that, contrary to what many people think, the Christian ministry is not one of life’s soft options. Indeed he considered that when properly and conscientiously performed it is the most responsible and demanding work in the world.
